For years I invited people to my home for Shabbat and holiday dinners.  As my home is kosher, I typically served a meat meal, followed by a homemade dairy free parve dessert.  My husband would ask our guests, “Have you ever tasted anything this good that is made without dairy?”  Even my French friends could not believe my desserts were made without butter or milk.  Guests encouraged me to open a bakery, an idea I rejected outright.

With the financial meltdown of Wall Street, my husband encouraged me to diversify the source of our family’s income.  At Passover 2009, I started selling my Kosher for Passover Mandel Bread.  The response was so overwhelming, over the course of the holiday, people came back for more.  Friends’ children were squabbling over who took the last one.  In fact, one child came to buy more and ate three on the way home, leaving a trail of crumbs down my front path.  With the encouragement of my family and the positive response of my friends to my mandel bread, I created Desserts By Diane, LLC.

I prepare dairy free parve desserts, not only to meet kashruth requirements, but also because Barry, my husband and CTO, Chief Tasting Officer, is allergic to dairy products.  Upon eating foods made with dairy, his cheeks get itchy, his throat gets scratchy, and residual effects last for hours.  To Barry, no meal is complete without dessert.  Not just any dessert, but one that explodes with great flavors and has the “right” texture.  Satisfying his demanding palate serves as a constant inspiration to me.

With Desserts By Diane, it is our goal to produce the highest quality, easily accessible, dairy free parve desserts that have a homemade look with a gourmet taste.  Furthermore, we are committed to giving back to the community from which we gain our strength.  When new employment opportunities arise, every effort is made to use the talent within the community.  In addition, a portion of all sales goes to charity.

As much as I’d like you to join me at my Shabbat and holiday tables, I cannot invite everyone.  But, I am delighted to share my delicious desserts with you.  Please feel free to let me know what you think of them by writing to me at comments@dessertsbydiane.com.  I hope you enjoy them!
